Dev Update: Asset Manager is Now Live

We’ve been hard at work on hosted.md over the past few weeks and we’re excited to share some updates. The headline feature is that the Asset Manager is now live.

The Asset Manager gives you a place to upload and manage files for your site. Everything you upload is mapped to /assets/ on your website, which makes it easy to keep things organized. Files are stored on R2 alongside your HTML, so they’re served quickly and reliably.

You can use this feature in different ways depending on the type of site you’re building. Want to add a custom stylesheet while editing a template? Drop it into the Asset Manager. Building a page that needs a gallery of images, videos, or audio files? Upload them here and they’re ready to go. For now the storage limit is set at 1 GB, but this will change once subscriptions are introduced with different limits.

Alongside this, we’ve added the ability to set different page templates and layouts. While this isn’t fully in use yet due to the small number of themes currently available, it’s an important step forward and will come into play more as additional templates are added.

We also fixed an issue that made it look like a website hadn’t been created after sign up. The problem turned out to be that a holding page was missing. Thanks to one of our beta users for flagging this - it’s now fixed and new sites will always have a clear starting point.

And of course, there have been a number of smaller bug fixes across the platform to make things run more smoothly.

What’s next

The next big milestone is custom domain support. This will give you the ability to connect your own domain instead of relying only on a hosted.md subdomain. Alongside that, we’ll be rolling out a range of SEO improvements to make sure your sites are set up correctly for search engines right from the start. Extra themes and templates are on the horizon too, but they won’t be the main focus until domains and SEO are in place.
